9% OffIt was 86F here in Maine yesterday. In the afternoon my kids had popsicles outside for the first time in 2022! That prompted my five-year-old to ask, “why are they called popsicles?” I didnt have a great answer regardless of the fact that I did recall enjoying a TED-Ed lesson about popsicles a couple of years earlier. I went and looked it up. How the Popsicle Was Invented explains the origin of the yummy treat itself in addition to the name “Popsicle.” This TED-Ed lesson doesnt include any multiple option or conversation concerns. Its just an enjoyable little lesson for trainees to think about as the weather condition warms and ice cream trucks start to appear in neighborhoods (side note, ice cream trucks is among the few things I miss out on about residing in a suburb).
Applications for EducationYou could extend this lesson by doing a little cooking area science lesson with grade school trainees. They might experiment with sugar content and flavoring. And they could compare the time it considers a Popsicle to freeze to the time it considers an equivalent quantity of water without sugar or flavoring to freeze.
